Photograhy week

Este conjunto de fotos fez parte de uma proposta para a disciplina de fotografia. A proposta era retratar cores em fotos a preto e branco. Ou seja, tínhamos de retratar a cor por exemplo pelas emoções que elas nos transmitissem. Este foi um trabalho de pares e eu e a minha colega decidimos retratar não uma cor por foto, ou uma só cor nas fotos (eram precisas 4 fotos no mínimo) mas sim algo que representasse as cores num sentido mais geral...assim queriamos passar a mensagem de que as cores naturais dentro da cidade apresentam-se como algo cada vez mais escasso, débil, diminuto...para isso atribuímos toda essa simbologia a um ramo de flores, figura que materializa a noção de natural, cor...

Tivemos apenas 2 horas para tirar as fotos...por isso foi pensar no conceito e ir imediatamente para a rua experimentar e tentar fazer com que as nossas ideias dessem resultado.

Ainda na semana de fotografia tivemos de apresentar um souvenir que representasse a personalidade, o carisma de um determinado fotógrafo que foi atribuído a cada par aleatoriamente...a mim e à minha colega calhou o William Klein, fantástico fotógrafo da época dos anos 50, 6o. Irei posteriormente postar a foto do souvenir mas entretanto ainda não o consegui fotografar, porque o professor gostou tanto dele que nos pediu se podia ficar com ele, e agora tenho de o encontrar para tirar uma foto :)

This set of photos are part of the photography brief that I had. The concept was to portrait colors in black and white...that is to say that we had to portrait colors through its the emotions that they transmit to us for example. We had to do this exercise in pairs and we had just 2 hours to do it. Basically we had to think about a concept and immediately go for experimenting our ideas and shoot them. We both decided not to shoot a color per photo or a whole color for the whole photos (the minimum was 4 pictures). Instead we wanted to create something that would represent colors in a more general sense. This way we wanted to symbolize the natural colors...or the lack of them...because natural colors are getting fewer and fewer within the concrete walls and ground of the city...so it they are decreasing and running out without getting much noticed about it.

After this exercise and before the photograhy week was over we had to create a souvenir that would represent the personality of a photographer that was given to us. Once again, this work was maid with the same pairs and we had William Klein to research about. He is a phenomenal photographer mainly known from the 50s, 60s. I´ll be posting the photo of the souvenir later because I don´t have it with me or a photo of it yet, because our tutor enjoyed it so much that he asked us if he could keep it for him xD now we have to find him and take a photo of the souvenir :)

Interactive Design

Na semana de Interactive Design foi tempo de fazer experiências com o programa Quartz Composer. A ideia era criar um screensaver baseado na ideia no conceito de "Ghost in the Machine", ou seja, alguma emoção, personalidade, personagem, etc, que é desvendada assim que desligamos o computador ou não o estamos a utilizar. Como se este tivesse uma espécie de vida própria que se revelasse quando não estamos presentes.

A minha ideia foi baseada no conceito de calma e paz que o meu computador deve sentir quando eu não estou a trabalhar nele...porque sempre que estou a trabalhar é uma verdadeira confusão - montes de janelas abertas, imensos programas ligados ao mesmo tempo e todos os documentos que tenho de salvar nesse espaço de tempo vão todos parar ao desktop...desta forma, imaginei que quando não o estou a utilizar o meu mac entra num estado zen, onde existe um timming mais lento de movimento...assim criei um screensaver que vai girando entre 2 cenários...os cenários vão aparecendo conforme a rotação do elemento principal (a árvore que posteriormente se transforma em vulcão). Como para mim as paisagens e jardins japoneses me inspiram uma grande tranquilidade e paz de espírito decidi reflectir isso mesmo no meu screensaver.

Fiquei bastante satisfeita com este trabalho porque só tive 2 dias pra o fazer (na verdade foi 1, porque no primeiro tive de pensar no conceito e experimentar no programa pra ver se era possível realizá-lo) e gostei bastante do resultado final, apesar de obviamente ter sempre pormenores a melhorar, mas dentro do tempo estabelecido penso que me safei bem xD até porque o Quartz não tem uma timeline onde se pode estabelecer que determinado elemento entra na composição num determinado tempo (pelo menos com os patches normais)...o que fiz foi basicamente andar a experimentar imensos valores sempre à procura do timming perfeito...isso até foi o que me ocupou mais tempo...porque era sempre...tenta...não...tenta outra vez...não...mas penso que valeu a pena :)

Peço desculpa pela qualidade do video porque tive de capturar o screensaver através de um programa que grava o que temos no desktop (Screenium) porque não havia mais nenhuma forma de o fazer...o movimento no screensaver original é fluido, não tem as quebras que aqui aparecem no video...mas penso que dá pra ter uma ideia do aspecto final ;) ah e o passarinho que às vezes se vê é comandado pelo movimento do rato.

Adorei a experiência e deixou-me ainda com mais vontade de trabalhar na área de Interactive Design e animação :D

In the week of Interactive Design there was time to practice with a new program called Quartz Composer. The idea was to create a screensaver based on the concept of "The Ghost in the Machine"...that is to say that we had to create something that would represent some sort of feeling, emotion, character, personality, etc, that would be trapped inside the computer, and would be released once its owner had left. It is has if the computer would come alive on our absence.

My idea was based on the concept of peacefulness, because everytime I´m working on my Mac it gets so much messy - with several windows opened, tons of programs turned on, and everytime I have to save anything on that space of time I save it on the desktop...so you can image how my computer looks when I working on it...so I imagined that once I left it, my Mac would turn itself into a Zen mode, with slow motion and images that would suggest calm and tranquility. For me one of the first images that comes to my mind when I think of peacefulness is japanese gardens and landscapes....so that was where I focused the aspect of my screensaver. The screensaver transforms itself into 2 different scenery, that appear by the rotation of the main element (the tree that turn into a volcano). The first one is the tree with the flowers and the sun and on the second one appears the volcano, the smoke and the clouds.

I was quite happy with the final result because we had just 2 days to do it (well actually it was 1 day, as on the first day I had to think about the concept and experiment it on Quartz to see if it was possible to make it). Of course there´s some details I would like to improve but anyway...that´s what I think everytime I do anything xD the Quartz Composer doesn´t have a timeline where you can put the values that will make some element turn up when you want (at least with the normal patches available)...I basically had to guess every value to try to make it appear on the time I wanted...that was actually where I had to spent most of the time...it was like...trying...failing...trying...failing...trying... but anyway, I think it was worth it ;)

I apologize for the bad quality of the video because I had to record the screensaver with a program that records stuff that you have on your desktop (Screenium). The actual screensaver doesn´t stops has it does on the video but anyway, I think you can see how it looks like ;) oh and the bird´s movement is controlled by the mouse´s movement.

I loved the experience and now I want even more to do interactive design and animation :D

Rotation System

Só para fazer um update naquilo que ando a fazer - neste primeiro termo (até ao Natal) estou numa espécie de rotation onde vou tendo diferentes disciplinas em cada semana, ou seja...em cada semana tenho uma disciplina diferente e no fim de cada semana tenho de apresentar um projecto final para essa mesma disciplina.

Aqui vai o meu plano semanal de disciplinas até às férias de Natal:

1º e 2º semana - London Project (com Drawing e Printmaking)

3º - Context (algo mais teórico, para reflectir sobre vários aspectos do design, da sociedade, etc)

4º - Typography e Letterpress (irei postar o meu projecto de tipografia em breve)

5º - Photography

6º - Interactive Design

7º - Advertising

8º - Moving Image

9º - Digital Boot Camp (não tenho a certeza do que é isto ainda xD)

Acho interessante a forma como este sistema de rotação de disciplinas funciona - permite-nos ter uma semana especialmente para uma determinada disciplina. Apesar de termos de apresentar um projecto em cada semana obrigatoriamente (por vezes temos apenas 2 dias para o fazer, porque nos outros dias temos aulas e workshops) acho que ajuda estar focado numa só disciplina.

Just doing some updates on what I´m doing until Christmas holidays - this first term (until Christmas) is based on a rotation, where we have a different subject each week, where we also have to present a project each week for that same subject.

Here it goes my weekly schedule until Christmas:

1º and 2º week - London Project (with Drawing and Printmaking)

3º - Context (something more theoretical, where we can discuss and think about ideas, design, society and the world in general)

4º - Typography and Letterpress (I´ll be posting my typography project soon)

5º - Photography

6º - Interactive Design

7º - Advertising

8º - Moving Image

9º - Digital Boot Camp (I´m still not sure of what this is about xD)

I find this rotation system quite interesting to begin the year with, because we can focus on a certain subject for the whole week. Although we have to present a final project each week (where sometimes we just have 2 days or so to make it, because on the other days we have classes and workshops), I think it helps to be focused on just one subject per week.

London Project

O "London Project" foi o meu primeiro projecto na Saint Martins (já o fiz à várias semanas, mas só agora é que tive tempo para o postar). A ideia consistia em criar algo que estivesse directa ou indirectamente ligado ao rio Tamisa. Podíamos criar qualquer coisa em qualquer formato...por isso tínhamos um milhão de opções e escolhas a fazer antes de mais quanto à natureza do trabalho em si...e sendo o rio Tamisa uma das principais causas de Londres ser a fantástica cidade que é hoje, havia também imensas formas de o interpretar...

O primeiro dia começou por ser um "walk and draw day", onde parávamos a cada 5 a 10 minutos para desenhos de 1 minuto apenas...podiamo-nos focar no que quiséssemos...não tínhamos de modo algum de desenhar necessariamente isto ou aquilo...mais uma vez era completamente livre....depois já no Royal Festival Hall, um edifício que fica à beira rio parámos para almoçar e fazer um desenho de 1 hora...depois foi hora de ir até à Tate Modern e fazer mais alguns desenhos e apresentá-los ao grupo. Aqui estão apenas alguns dos desenhos que fiz (são todos desenhos de 1 minuto, excluindo o último em que tive aproximadamente 1 hora):

The "London Project" was the first project of my first year at Saint Martins (actually I´ve alrealy done it a few weeks ago, but I just got the time now to post it). The brief was to make a project related to the river Thames. We could do literaly anything as long as it would be directly or indirectly related to the river itself...this way we had a million options to make so we could decided in what to focus...since the river is one of the main reasons of why London has grown up to the city it is today, we had quite a lot ways of interpreting it...

The first day was the "walk and draw day", where we would stop each 5 or 10 minutes to make a 1 minute drawing...we could draw anything we wanted to...we didn´t have to necessarily draw anything obviously related to the river or something like that...we were completely free to draw anything that would caught our attention. When we got to the river we went to the Royal Festival Hall, a very nice building on the riverside, where we had lunch and had to make a draw for 1 hour. Then we went to Tate Modern where drew a little bit more and afterwards we had to present it to our peers and to the teacher.

These are just a few drawings I´ve made on that day (every drawing was made in just 1 minute, aside from the last one, where we had 1 hour):

Num dos dias seguintes fomos experimentar técnicas de impressão...aprendemos a técnica de "água-forte" (etching) e monoprinting (não sei muito bem como é a tradução exacta em português). Foi muito interessante porque tinhamos o dia todo para experimentar-mos diferentes processos e estavamos à vontade para fazermos o que quiséssemos. Tivemos assim a oportunidade de desenvolver os nossos desenhos e ideias do rio. Aqui estão alguns dos resultados finais:

On one of the following days we went to Printmaking...we learned how to make etching and monoprinting. It was very interesting as we had all day to experiment different approaches, processes and we were completely free to do whatever we wanted. This way we had an extra opportunity to develop our ideas and drawings of the river. Here are some of the final results:

No último dia do London Project tivemos a apresentação final - foi muito engraçada a forma como a fizemos porque tinhamos umas 6 filas de mesas cheias de trabalhos, onde andavamos em grupos a comentar e a apresentar os trabalhos...e considero super interessante o facto de haver trabalhos tão distintos...só mostra que para um mesmo projecto existem milhares de ideias e interpretações!

O meu projecto consistia numa espécie de animação onde se via como Londres tinha mudado ao longo dos séculos especificamente à beira rio...achei muito interessante o papel que o rio desempenhou e desempenha sobre Londres por isso resolvi abordar esse aspecto...fui muito inspirada pela frase "The river Thames is liquid history".

Projectei imagens de elementos de Londres, numa foto da cidade à beira rio, as quais deveriam representar de alguma forma o ambiente vivido durante os séculos XIV / XV, no presente e como imagino que será no futuro. Idealmente esta seria uma instalação a ocorrer no local onde tirei a foto do tio, onde estes elementos seriam projectados em ecrãs transparentes colocados na margem do rio, recriando a paisagem do Tamisa - como se fossem uma espécie de layers colocadas entre o nosso olhar e o rio. No entanto, para ser possível apresentar o meu projecto na sala tive de recriar a situação, projectando os elementos extra numa foto.

As imagens foram todas convertidas para 3D, por isso foi muito engraçado a forma como as pessoas interagiam com o meu projecto pois elas tinham de usar óculos 3D para visualizar as imagens com mais realismo. No fim foram seleccionadas várias categorias para os trabalhos e o meu foi eleito "the most amusing" :)

On the last day it was time for the final crit. It was quite amusing for me the way we had to present it - we had like 6 rows of tables where we would put our projects, and then we would walk in groups and comment and present the projects. It was quite fantastic to see tons of different approaches to the same subject, which shows that for each project there are literally a million ways to develop it!

My project was based on the idea of recreating the riverside view of Thames throughout the years. I was quite surprised, after doing my research, of the major importance of the river to the development of London...and I was quite inspired by the sentence "The river Thames is liquid history". So my ideia was to recreate London at XIV / XV centuries, present and future.

Ideally the idea was to do an art installation by the riverside, where there would be transparent screens where images of different elements would be projected on it, recreating the river view. It would be like a "layer", where it would have the river on the back, and the person would see it through the screen so that he would see it with the extra elements. It´s quite hard trying to describe it in words...

Anyways...as the idea was to present in room in Saint Martins, I had to project the images onto a riverside picture of Thames.

In the final there was a kind of animation being projected into the picture, recreating London throughout the time. The images were converted into 3D, so people would have to use 3D glasses. It was quite funny seeing my colleges grabbing the glasses and having fun watching the little animation. At the end, several categories were made, where they would select different projects for each of them...mine won the "most amusing" category :)

Hello Kitty in Saint Martins :D

Yuko Yamaguchi (a designer da Hello Kitty desde 1980) esteve

na minha faculdade, na Saint Martins :D em comemoração dos

35 anos da Hello Kitty (a Hello Kitty foi apresentada pela

primeira vez em Londres).

Apresentaram um pequeno filme protagonizado pela Hello Kitty,

no qual demonstrava como ela foi mudando através do tempo.

A apresentação foi muito interessante e dada com bastante

cuidado, não estivessem eles numa escola de futuros designers :P

Depois a Yuko Yamaguchi respondeu a várias perguntas feitas

pelos estudantes e no final assinou autógrafos para quem quisesse,

e eu disse-lhe umas palavrinhas em japonês, as quais ela percebeu

o que me deixou orgulhosa xD

Yuko Yamaguchi (the designer of Hello Kitty since 1980) was at

my school, in Saint Martins :D in celebration of the 35th anniversary

of Hello Kitty (Hello Kitty was firstly presented in London).

They presented a short film about the history of this so beloved

character, which you can see it on youtube, if you´re interested ;)

The way they presented Hello Kitty throughout the years was quite

interesting due to the fact that they paid a lot of attention to some

details, since they were presenting to a crowd of design students :P

and then Yuko Yamaguchi was able to answer some questions made

by the students.

In the end she signed some autographs :) and I kind of talked to her

in Japanese, which made me kind of proud xD
